Students in art classes finished making tiles for those not there, smooth tiles, glaze tiles, and transfer mural image to board.

Tuesday, April 8
Students continued creating tiles to fill in the mural, glazed tiles, and worked with Mrs. Greany in regularly scheduled art classes to explore other clay techniques and projects.

Kiln was loaded and started to fire glazed tiles around 6 p.m. The kiln kicked off around 2:45 a.m. (a short night sleep-wise!)

Wednesday, April 9
We experienced a bit of a kiln snafu. The tiles didn't get up to the proper temperature, so we had to refire in the morning, putting us behind schedule. Students in Photography and Drawing classes benefited by making awesome ceramic cheese trays with texture while 8th Graders worked on portrait drawing.

With the early dismissal at 1:00 p.m. today, we pushed the cooling of the kiln with fans (and melted the face of the box fan a bit). Numerous students (and a fabulous substitute teacher) gave up their afternoon off to help lay the tiles back on the mural and cement them down. Mrs. Sternhagen made a snack and soda run to help everyone to get through the afternoon. With some of the tiles not yet as glossy as we needed, coats of clear varnish spray was applied. Thanks to all who stayed and helped out today!

Thursday, April 10
Students in regularly scheduled art classes will applied grout and cleaned tiles on mural in designated work area in the Commons.

Marshalltown “Times-Republican” came at 9:00 to take pictures. Article is in Friday's paper. (There was a fantastic intro article in their paper last Friday.)

Mrs. Greany worked with regularly scheduled art classes exploring other clay techniques and projects.

Friday, April 11
A mural unveiling ceremony was held in the Auditorium at 2:00 p.m.
